The Rohingya Digital Activists

Digital advocacy by refugee communities living within refugee camps is a unique phenomenon that has substantially proliferated particularly in the last few years due to the rapidly increasing access to smartphones, the internet and social media platforms. Taking advantage of these, many Rohingya activists living in the world's largest refugee camp in Cox's Bazaar, Bangladesh, have become a strong voice for their community, spreading awareness about their hopes and aspirations across the world.

Our report on the Rohingya digitals activists has been one year in the making. We initially collected data through open-source investigation methods and we also conducted field research in the refugee camps. Through our field research we tried to understand what are the parameters within which digital advocacy can be conducted from inside these refugee camps. We also visited most of the prominent and award winning digital activists living in the refugee camps and have interviewed them.

The face-to-face interviews lasted between 2-4 hours on average. Through these interviews we tried to find out how these refugee youths living under dire conditions become inspired to become a voice for their people, what challenges they face and what successes they have achieved.
